"HIV/AIDS" |
The Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome, or AIDS, is the collective term for all the symptoms and conditions due to infection of the Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV). HIV attacks the infected body's immune system, making it incapable of fighting off diseases. In a normal person, a cold is inconvenient, but to a person with AIDS it can be deadly. HIV can be transmitted by blood, parent to child, and sexually through exchange of body fluids. |
Globally, 25 million people have died of AIDS since the 1980s, and an estimated 38 million are living with HIV. Although there are treatments to alleviate the conditions of AIDS victims, there is no known cure for HIV/AIDS. A condom, when properly used, can drastically reduce the risk of contracting AIDS from an HIV-infected partner, although abstinence is the best prevention.
