"HEPATITIS B" |
Hepatitis B is a viral disease which affects the liver, causing jaundice, joint pains, liver enlargement and abdominal pain after initial contraction. The virus which causes Hepatitis B remains lifelong in the infected person. Hepatitis B can be transmitted through blood transfusion, unprotected sex, and from parent to child. |
A Hepatitis B vaccine is available and especially recommended for persons at risk of contracting Hepatitis B. Alpha-interferon, adefovir and lamivudine are some of the treatments available for those with chronic Hepatitis B. Condoms may also help prevent infection during sex, although a vaccine must be the first option.
